Cylindrical styli measure two-dimensionally and are particularly suitable for narrow workpieces, such as thin sheet metal. Even narrow workpiece edges can be measured well with cylindrical styli. Care must be taken to ensure that the styli axis is mechanically aligned very precisely with the feature axis on the workpiece.  Styli with a straight shaft are the most simple designed styli. The full shaft length can be used as measuring length.
Tungsten carbide is mainly used for disc and cylindrical styli as well as spheres in special sizes, which can be manufactured according to customer specifications. Please note that tungsten carbide styli have a very high weight. ZEISS uses carbide shafts for standard styli. These represent a good combination of weight, durability and thermal expansion.
Depending on the material of the styli and the workpiece, wear of the styli may occur. Therefore, we recommend to check the styli regularly for wear. Also remember to clean the styli or replace them if necessary.
