Reference spheres are available in a variety of diameters and surface finishes for different coordinate measuring machines, sensors and styli size. For example, it is important to use a suitable reference sphere to avoid shaft interference with small styli diameters. With optical sensors, a matt sphere surface finish is required for reliable sensor qualifications.

References for different applications
Ceramic reference spheres are available in different sizes, surface finish quality, sphericity, and connection threads (M6 or M8). Reference sphere sizes are recommended based on styli diameters. For styli less than 1 mm: Reference Sphere 8 mm. For styli 1 to 2 mm: Reference Sphere 15 mm. For styli greater than 2 mm: Reference Sphere 25-30 mm. Other Reference bodies are available for different applications. Ring gauges are used to qualify optical-tactile measuring instruments. Optical gauges are suitable for calibrating the ViScan camera and other 2D sensors. Self-center probing prisms are used to calibrate the rotary table axis of a CMM. Where appropriate, reference bodies are supplied with a certificate of calibration.
